Indirect Skills

Indirect Care is evaluated during the performance of every skill (except hand washing) during the Clinical Skills Test. The Indirect Care checkpoints that the evaluator will observe for while candidates perform skills are:

7 CHECKPOINTS

THAT MUST BE DONE WITH EVERY PATIENT

Does the candidate?

  1) Greet resident, address by name, and introduce self?

       (Example:  Hello Ms. Smith, my name is Sam Goetz and I will be your CNA today)  By introducing yourself and calling the resident by name you are creating a professional relationship that helps the resident feel more at ease. 

   2) Provide explanations to resident about care before beginning and during care?

       (Example:  "I am going to (name skill, example clean your dentures)."  As you are          performing the skill them explain to the resident what you are doing.   "Ms Smith I am now taking your dentures to the sink so I can clean them with running water" (the resident will be another student who is there also taking their test and will be an "actor" while you perform the skill.  You will also be required to be the "actor" for that student while they perform their skills).  By explaining what you are doing to the resident you help them to feel more comfortable and remove any fear about the procedure they may have. 

    3) Ask resident about preferences during care?

      (Example:  "Ms. Smith would you like me to begin to clean the top part of your mouth or the bottom first?"   This helps the resident to feel they have some control over their care.

    4) Use Standard Precautions and infection control measures when providing care?

Standard Precautions means that you protect your self anytime you could possible come into contact with blood or body fluids.   ie:  wear gloves when cleaning residents dentures because saliva is a body fluid.   Infection Control mean that you protect the resident from germs.  ( ie:  wash your hands and use a barrier on the overbed table before placing your supplies on it).  This helps to protect you and the resident. 

    5) Ask resident about comfort or needs during care or before care completed?

Example:  "If at anytime Ms. Smith you feel any discomfort please let me know."  That is an example during care. This lets the resident know that they can stop at anytime if it becomes uncomfortable   "Ms. Smith can I get you anything else before I go?"   This makes sure the resident's needs have been met before you leave.

    6) Promote resident rights during care?

Example:  Knocking and asking permission to come in before you enter the resident's room.   This is their home and just as you knock and wait for permission to enter at someone's home you also knock and wait for permission before entering a patient's room

     7) Promote resident safety during care?

Example:  Making sure the bed is in the lowest portion before you finish your skill, this helps prevent falls if the resident should get out of bed.   Resident's safety is number 1.
